Back in 2014, Vaughn introduced the V6 2200 leg pad - the first pad to have a full sheet carbon fiber as a component of the core. The design was revolutionary as it made the pad very light, very responsive, and because the composition of the carbon sheet allowed for some flexibility the pad was able to flex easily while still keeping it's shape over time. For 2016, Vaughn has refined this pad design and has introduced the Velocity 7 XR Pro Carbon leg pad. The XR is a fantastic choice for goalies using nearly any style who demand the best from their gear.
The "Pro Core" of the XR has a full length and width ultra high density foam core sheet that helps the pad maintain it's shape over time. The pad also features Vaughn's "Carbon Enhanced Performance" - a new Carbon Fiber recoil plate that runs the entire length of the pad. This recoil plate is flexible enough to allow the pad to bend easily at the flex points, but rigid enough to spring the pad back into shape after it has been flexed. And, becuase the pad is made using only sheet foams (no shredded foams), you can expect the pad to maintain it's overall height for a much, much longer period of time. The thigh rise design has been "over-squared" to insure that it fills the upper section of the pad to that 11" max width and also reduces the five-hole openings when in the butterfly position.
On the inside edge, the pad seams have been modified so that no binding is exposed, and the majority of the HD foam edge is completely flat to make sliding very easy. The landing gear at the knee and the knee risers are combined into one solid block and incorporated to the inside edge for better pad response and a more ergonomic knee position in the butterfly. For 2016, this landing gear has been made wider to provide even more stability while in the butterfly position. Additionally, the inside edge of the pad has been made thinner to reduce weight, and the foams used here are harder so that sliding performance is maximized.
The knee cradle and leg channel feature Vaughn's proprietary MSH3 material for both comfort and quicker pad rotation. The knee lock is wide in the XR, and the integrated knee/thigh protector has been moved higher up the thigh rise to provide better knee protection and more room in the knee area. The outside knee cradle pad features a hinged design and a lowered, dual elastic strap position that runs under the bend in your knee rather than directly behind it.
The straps are all made of leather, and the knee area features an elongated adjustable buckle tab that allows the goalie to fine tune the strapping setup based on his/her individual style of play. At the boot, a sliding toe bridge allows for smooth skate rotation and faster pad positioning in the butterfly.
Finally, new graphics have been introduced for 2016 to provide an additional color zone. Goalies wishing to customize their XR Pro Carbon sets now have more color options than ever before so that they can come up with some incredibly unique designs!
Additional features include:
- Flatter style instep
- Firm boot flex for higher stance on the leg. Boot flex on the XR is harder than the XF, but softer than the LT98 Ventus.
- Thin front face cushion foam (harder than XF, softer than LT98 Ventus)
- Higher boot scoop angle (steeper boot angle than XF, more shallow than LT98 Ventus)
- Solid inside knee drive block
- New, higher boot strap position for easier pad rotation
