Ice hockey skates are made up of 3 main components: the skate boots, plastic holders and steel runners (blades). The holder is riveted to the underside of the boot, and the runner is attached to the holder with screws or rivets that keep it in a channel on the underside of the holder. Sometimes holders and runners break or simply wear down over time and need to be replaced. If your hockey skate boots are still in good condition, but it's time to replace the blades or holders, you can often do so for a much lower cost than the price of a brand new pair of skates.
Replacing your runners is a pretty easy process. First, you have to figure out whether or not your runners are actually replaceable because certain models are detachable while others are permanently fixed to the holder. If you have replaceable runners, there will either be a bolt on the side of the holder that goes through the runner and keeps it secured or there will be a bolt inside the back tower of the holder that can be accessed through a hole in the heel of the hockey skate boot. Simply remove the bolt and then carefully remove the runner from the channel in the holder. Insert the new runner and bolt it back into place. It's really that simple.
It's not quite as easy to replace your hockey skate holders. Unless you're a trained professional with all of the proper tools, we do not recommend that you try to replace your holders on your own. The process involves the use of special tools, such as a rivet driver and remover, small copper rivets and often requires the use of a power drill if new holes need to be made to accommodate a holder with a different rivet pattern. We recommend that you allow the professionals at your local hockey shop take care of this part of the process. You can also mail your skates to one of our Hockey Giant stores to have this service completed by one of our store team members.
