Definition of Dump and Chase

Dump and chase is a type of offensive attack that is executed by shooting the puck into the other team's zone, to the corners or behind their net, and then chasing after it. The style of dump and chase is characteristic of North American hockey. European style hockey involves more direct, tape-to-tape puck movement between players. Dump and chase can be an effective strategy for teams that play an aggressive, physical style. The forecheckers are able to wear down the opposing team's defenders over the course of a game by dumping the puck into their zone, chasing them down and finishing them off with a body check.
