The Vancouver Canucks were originally members of the PCHL from 1945-52 before joining the WHL from 1952-70. In 1970 the Canucks joined the NHL along with the Buffalo Sabres to become the 13th and 14th teams in the league. The term "Canuck" is a slang name for Canadians, but is typically viewed as an endearing term, although in some cases it is applied derogatorily. The Canucks have made 3 Stanley Cup Finals appearances but have yet to emerge victorious. Prior to their 2011 Finals Matchup with the Bruins, in their last Finals appearance, the Canucks met the New York Rangers in 1994 for a showdown that is remembered as one of the greatest matchups in the last 5 decades. Pavel Bure led the Canucks against Mark Messier's Rangers where Vancouver was defeated in 7 games, which can largely be attributed to the exceptional play of goaltender Mike Richter.

Over the years, Vancouver has been the home of many NHL greats, such as Alexander Mogilny, Mark Messier, Mats Sundin, Cam Neely, Igor Larionov and Trevor Linden. The current Canucks squad is now led by Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler and goaltender Roberto Luongo, who are eager to bring the first Stanley Cup Championship to Vancouver. They've come incredibly close to winning the Cup in recent years, going as far as the 7th game of the Stanley Cup Finals in a matchup with the Boston Bruins in 2011. The Canucks seem to come closer every year, and they have high hopes and expectations of bringing the Cup to Vancouver very soon.
