Hockey shafts are a great alternative to one piece composite hockey sticks. With hockey shafts, you have the option of simply replacing your blade if it breaks, whereas with one piece composite sticks you're simply out of luck if the blade breaks. You can also mix and match different brands of shafts and hockey replacement blades as long as the hosel size is the same. There are 2 common hosel sizes; Standard (.620) and Tapered (.520). The plug of the blade is inserted into the hosel of the shaft. Tapered hosels are narrower than standard hosels, and although a tapered blade will fit into a standard size hosel, there will be too much extra space between the blade and the side walls of the shaft to keep it secured. So always make sure to use the proper size blade in your hockey shaft.
You also have the option of choosing a shaft with a grip coating or a clear coating on the shaft. The choice you make is a matter of personal preference. Some players like the added texture on the surface of a shaft with grip while other players find it cumbersome. There's no wrong choice here so just pick whatever feels most natural to you.
