The Philadelphia Flyers have long been known as a bruising team with a mean streak that very few can match. As part of the six team expansion in 1967, the Flyers quickly gained notoriety for their hard-nosed style of play as the infamous "Broad Street Bullies". It took just 7 years for the Flyers to win their first Stanley Cup in 1974, which they captured once again the following season. The Flyers have always been a physical force and the tradition was continued with the "Legion of Doom" which was a dominant line made up of Eric Lindros, John LeClair and Mikael Renberg. Their line combined an unparalleled amount of size, strength and offensive prowess which allowed them to dismantle the opposing defense with an incredibly dynamic approach.

Since the departure of Lindros, the team has gone through some notable changes but has remained committed to the rough and tough style that has proven successful for decades. Since 1994 the Flyers have only missed the playoffs once, and although they haven't been able to capture the Stanley Cup since 1975, the Flyers have built up a strong core that should lead them to victory soon enough. They even pulled off one of the toughest feats in all of professional sports, in the 2010 playoffs, when they came back from a 3 game deficit to defeat the Boston Bruins with 4 straight wins in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.

Jeff Carter and Mike Richards left the team during the 2011 offseason, leaving Flyers fans wondering who would lead the offensive attack. This was just a season after losing Simon Gagne to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Flyers responded by making a surprise signing, picking up Jaromir Jagr in his return from the KHL. He left soon after to join the Dallas Stars and eventually the New Jersey Devils, but the Flyers have been able to make room for more of their young talent to move up in the ranks. Under the leadership of star forward Claude Giroux, acquisition of forward Jakub Voracek and solid play of Scott Hartnell and Wayne Simmonds, the Flyers have bounced back to re-establish themselves as a prominent contender in the Eastern Conference.
