The Los Angeles Kings joined the NHL during the 1967 expansion along with the St. Louis Blues, Minnesota North Stars, California Seals, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins. Since their inception, the Kings have struggled as a playoff team, only advancing to the Stanley Cup finals one time, where they were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. Although the Kings have experienced fairly consistent regular season success, their playoff misfortunes seem to overshadow the true strength of their club. Acquiring Wayne Gretzky in 1988, the Kings continued to develop and strengthen their lineup with Jari Kurri, Luc Robitaille and Rob Blake becoming the face of the team throughout the 90s.

In recent years, the Kings have turned to development of several highly skilled prospects into elite players who have given the Kings renewed sense of hope and direction for their club. Drew Doughty, Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown took the Kings from 3 straight losing seasons to an outstanding performance in 2009-2010 in which they finished 6th in the Western Conference regular season standings. With the off-season acquisitions of Mike Richards and Simon Gagne, along with the trade deadline deal for Jeff Carter in 2012, the Kings were able to capture their first Stanley Cup Championship by defeating the New Jersey Devils, thanks in major part to the performance of 2012 Vezina Trophy Finalist Jonathon Quick. In 2014, the Kings repeated the feat to claim their 2nd Cup, toppling the New York Rangers in just 5 games.
