When dealing with ice hockey skate sizes, the terms Junior and Youth are NOT interchangeable. Youth skates are built for the smallest, youngest players, ages 2 - 7, and they run from size 6.0 to 13.5 (U.S. Shoe Size [Kids] 7 - 1). Junior hockey skates are larger than youth skates, and are generally sized for 7 - 13 year old skaters, with skate sizes running from 1.0 - 5.5 (U.S. Shoe Size [Youth] 2 - 6.5). See the image below for a simple chart that helps explain the relationship between skate sizes and age groups.
Most hockey skate manufacturers recommend going 1 size down from your Men's/Boys' U.S. Shoe Size in order to get the best skate fit. If your child is growing quickly, you may want to consider going just 1/2 size down from his U.S. Shoe Size rather than 1 full size down. This will allow for some comfortable growing room.
