The Columbus Blue Jackets joined the NHL in 2000 along with the Minnesota Wild, bringing the total number of NHL teams to 30. As a young organization, the Blue Jackets are still going through the grueling, building process but experienced their first playoff berth in 2009, although they were swept by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round.

After the 2013 Realignment, the Blue Jackets joined the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference, among the Penguins, Rangers, Flyers, Capitals, Islanders, Devils and Hurricanes. With the loss of franchise player Rick Nash, the Columbus Blue Jackets will rely heavily on Ryan Johansen, Artem Anisimov, Brandon Dubinsky and Nick Foligno on the front end while Jack Johnson (acquired from Los Angeles Kings in 2012) and James Wisniewski lead the D-corps.
