The Colorado Avalanche moved to Denver from Quebec City, Quebec in 1995 and promptly changed their name from the Nordiques to the Avalanche. The franchise is still sorely missed in Quebec, but experienced immediate success upon its first season in Denver, winning the Stanley Cup in 1996 with a 4 game sweep of the Florida Panthers. With a star-studded lineup that included Peter Forsberg, Joe Sakic and goaltender Patrick Roy the Avalanche became a dominant force in the Western Conference and won the Stanley cup again in 2001, defeating the reigning champion New Jersey Devils in 7 games.

The Avalanche have one of the most talented young rosters with budding stars Gabriel Landeskog, Matt Duchene, Nathan MacKinnon Ryan O'Reilly and defenseman Erik Johnson. Before his off-season departure to the St. Louis Blues, Paul Stastny followed the path of his father (Peter) and uncle (Anton) who both played for the Nordiques and are among the franchise's top 10 all time scorers. With Patrick Roy now behind the Avs bench, the players look poised and energized for a new era of excellence.
